A Preferred Provider Organization, or PPO, is a managed care organization of medical doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers who have contracted with an insurer or a third-party administrator to provide health care at reduced rates to the insurer’s or administrator’s clients. If your health insurance plan is a PPO plan, you will likely need a Primary Care Physician (PCP) to authorize treatment or specialist appointments. Some PPO plans will also provide coverage outside of your network, which differs from an HMO plan.
